Why the Volcano Made Santorini Famous
That view everyone comes to Santorini for? The dramatic cliffs, the caldera, the villages perched on the edge? All of it exists because a volcano blew the center of this island into the sky about 3,600 years ago. What's left is Nea Kameni, sitting in the middle of the caldera, still active, still steaming.
You can see it from the clifftops in Fira. But a Santorini volcano boat tour is different. You're inside the caldera, surrounded by it, swimming in water that's warm from volcanic activity underneath.
What You'll See on a Volcano Boat Tour
- Nea Kameni
The volcano itself. Black rock, loose gravel, sulfur smell. You can hike to the crater rim if you want (about 45 minutes up, 45 minutes down) or just swim around the island and skip the walking. Up to you.
- The Hot Springs Near Palea Kameni there's a patch of water that's noticeably warmer than everywhere else. Volcanic heat coming up from below. The water is murky with sulfur and minerals. Feels strange, looks strange, worth doing once. Fair warning: it will turn your white swimsuit yellow. Wear something dark.
- Fira, Imerovigli, Oia From the Water Cruising along the cliffs gives you Fira, Imerovigli, and Oia from an angle most people never see. Looking up at those villages from the water hits different than looking down from them.

Private Volcano Tour vs Group Tour
You can join a group tour. The big boats leave from Fira's Old Port, cost less, and pack 40 to 50 people on board. You'll follow a fixed schedule, rush through each stop, and swim in the hot springs with a crowd.
Or you can take a private Santorini volcano boat tour. Have the boat to yourself, stay longer where you want, skip what doesn't interest you, and actually relax.
