Ammoudi Bay is a small fishing harbor at the base of the cliffs below Oia. A handful of tavernas, some fishing boats, red volcanic rock, and water so blue it looks retouched. On paper, not much. In person, one of the most memorable spots on the island.

Most visitors walk down from Oia, eat grilled fish at one of the waterfront restaurants, and walk back up. That alone is worth the trip. Getting Down There (And Back Up)

The Stairs from Oia

About 280 steps cut into the cliff below the castle. The walk down takes 10 to 15 minutes and the caldera views on the way are ridiculous. Steps are wide but uneven in places, so wear real shoes. Going down is easy. Coming back up after lunch and wine is a different story. Budget 15 to 20 minutes for the climb and bring water.

There are donkeys on the staircase offering rides. The animal welfare concerns around these are well documented. A taxi back up costs €10 and takes 5 minutes.

By Car, ATV, or Taxi

A narrow road winds down to a small parking area near the bay. A few things to know:

Parking fills up fast, especially around dinner time. Arrive early or plan on circling.
Taxis from Oia are a flat €10 each way.
Ask your hotel to arrange the return taxi in advance. Cell service at the bay can be spotty.
The road down is narrow. If you are not comfortable with tight turns on a cliff, take the taxi.

Where to Eat

The Tavernas

Ammoudi is known across Santorini for its seafood. There are only a handful of restaurants, all clustered along the waterfront with tables practically hanging over the water. The fish is caught locally, grilled simply, and served with lemon, olive oil, and a view you did not pay extra for.

The popular names: Dimitris Ammoudi Taverna, Sunset Ammoudi by Paraskevas, and Ammoudi Fish Tavern. Menus are similar across all of them.

Reservations

Worth making if you want to eat at sunset. These places are small and the waterfront tables fill up hours before the sun goes down. Lunchtime is much easier to walk in, and the food tastes the same at 1pm. The light is just different.

Cliff Jumping at Agios Nikolaos

Walk past the last restaurant (keeping the water on your right) and follow the dirt path around the cliff for about five minutes. You will reach a small rocky area with a view of Agios Nikolaos, a tiny island sitting just offshore.

The setup is straightforward: swim out to the island (about 30 meters), climb the carved steps on the rock, and jump off into deep blue water below. The jump is maybe 3 to 4 meters depending on where you stand. Not massive, but the setting makes it feel bigger.

Before You Jump

Bring water shoes. The rocks are sharp getting in and out.
You need to be a confident swimmer. The 30 meter swim to the island and back is not optional.
Do not attempt this in rough water or high wind.
The depth is fine for jumping, but check conditions on the day.

Swimming Near the Bay

Ammoudi does not have a proper beach. The waterfront is rocks, dock, and restaurant patios. But there are two spots worth knowing.

The Cove South of the Harbor

Past the restaurants, a dirt path follows the coastline for about 10 minutes and leads to a small rocky cove. The water is deep, clear, and calm. Not a sunbathing spot, but for a quick swim with cliffs towering above you, it does the job.

Armeni Bay (by Boat)

When to Go

Different hours give different experiences at Ammoudi Bay.

Morning (before 10am). Quiet. Restaurants not open yet, but the light is soft and the harbor is nearly empty. Best for photos and swimming without an audience.
Midday to afternoon. Tavernas are open, the bay is lively, and the sun hits the red cliffs at their most vivid. Good for lunch and cliff jumping.
Sunset. The main event. The bay faces west, so you get a front row seat for the Oia sunset from water level instead of fighting for space on the castle walls 280 steps above. Reserve a dinner table early or sit on the rocks with a takeaway drink.

The short answer: late May through early October. That is when the water is warm enough to swim, the wind is manageable, and boat rental companies are fully running. But within that window, the months are not created equal. A July morning on the water and a September morning on the water are two completely different experiences.

Here is how each month actually plays out if you are planning to rent a boat in Santorini or book a private boat tour.

Air temperatures sit around 18 to 22°C, which feels great on land, but the sea is still cold at roughly 17 to 19°C. You can jump in, but you will not want to stay long.

The trade-off? Almost no wind, almost no crowds, and hotel prices about half of what they will be in two months. If the caldera to yourself sounds better than warm water, this is your window. Just know that not all boat rental companies are open yet, so confirm availability before you plan around it.

Boating verdict: Possible but limited. Great conditions on the boat, cold conditions in the water.

Late May and June: The Month Most Locals Would Pick

This is the window that people who live here would recommend. The water warms up to about 19 to 23°C (genuinely comfortable for swimming by late May and into June), the days are long and sunny, and the Meltemi winds have not started yet. The sea is flat on most mornings, which means smoother rides and easier anchoring at spots like White Beach and Red Beach .

Tourist numbers are building but the peak crowd has not arrived. You can visit the hot springs near the volcano without sharing the water with dozens of other swimmers, and the sunset spots are not yet surrounded by a fleet of catamarans.

June also has the longest daylight of the year. Sunset does not happen until around 8:30 to 8:40pm, which gives you a lot of time on the water even with a half day rental.

Boating verdict: The best overall window. Warm enough to swim, calm seas, and the island has not hit full capacity yet.

July and August: Warmest Water, Biggest Crowds, Most Wind

This is Santorini at maximum volume. Air temps push 27 to 32°C, the water hits its peak at 23 to 26°C (the warmest you will find all year), and every boat, hotel, restaurant, and sunset viewpoint is operating at full capacity.

The wildcard for boating in these months is the Meltemi. This is a strong northerly wind that blows across the Aegean every summer, and it hits Santorini directly. It does not blow every single day, but when it does, the sea gets rough fast, especially after midday. Mornings are nearly always calmer. If you are renting a boat during July or August, book a morning slot. The afternoon chop on the north side of the island can turn a relaxing day into something you did not sign up for.

The other reality: availability. Self-drive boats and private tours fill up weeks in advance during peak season. Do not wait until you arrive on the island to book. By then, the good slots are usually gone.

Boating verdict: Warmest water of the year and the best swimming conditions. But wind is unpredictable and you need to book well ahead. Morning slots only.

September: Ask Anyone Who Works on the Water

The crowds thin out noticeably after the first week. The caldera feels wider. The beaches you can only reach by boat are actually empty again. And the late September light does something to the caldera cliffs that the harsh July sun never does. Everything turns golden in the afternoon.

Sunset moves earlier (around 7:15pm by late September), so plan your sunset cruise timing accordingly. Boat availability is also much easier to work with. You can often book a few days ahead instead of weeks, and some operators offer better rates as the season winds down.

October: Worth It If You Catch the Right Week

From up on the cliffs, the caldera looks like a postcard. From the water, it looks like another planet. The cliff walls rise 300 meters straight out of the sea, striped with layers of red, black, and white volcanic rock. The villages sit on top like someone balanced them there by accident. Palea Kameni to Thirassia

About 15 minutes across the caldera. Thirassia is the quiet island on the western rim. You can eat lunch here, swim in the clear water, or hike up to the village of Manolas for views back across to Santorini. Thirassia feels like what Santorini probably felt like 40 years ago. 10. Do Nothing at Megalochori

Megalochori is a village about 10 minutes south of Fira. There is a small square with a couple of cafes, neoclassical houses, bougainvillea everywhere, and not much going on. That is the recommendation.

Get a coffee. Sit in the square. Watch an old man walk his dog. Read a book. This is Santorini without the performance. No queue for a photo spot, no influencer blocking the path, no €18 smoothie. Just a quiet morning in a beautiful village that most visitors drive past on their way to somewhere louder.
